Youth Choir: frequently-asked questions!

What do we do? We help lead the worship at ToTH. We sing anthems and songs, take part in the spoken parts of the service and help with hymns and psalms. We sing to the best of our ability, with enthusiasm and with the Spirit.

How often do we sing? Two anthems or songs each week at the 10:30 am service. In December we lead the Christmas Musical. Occasionally we sing in weekday services, at Generations and at other churches by invitation.

When do we rehearse? Thursdays 6:30-7:00 pm (younger singers) and 6:30-7:30 pm (older singers). The whole choir warms up on Sunday from 9:00 to 9:30 am.

What do we sing? Anthems and songs by composers from J.S. Bach, Orlando Gibbons, Mozart, the Wesleys and G.F. Händel, to Graham Kendrick, Barry Rose, Malcolm Archer and Dave Brubeck plus American and European traditional tunes. An easy item for all the kids is paired with a more challenging anthem for the more advanced singers.

How old do I have to be? Six years or more, and able to read. Younger kids (probationers) are mentored by older members (choristers). Promotion from probationer to chorister occurs at about age 9. There is no upper age limit.

More challenging music? Choristers join the Adult Choir for Evensong (6:00 pm, first Sunday of odd months) and in occasional anthems and larger works (e.g. Vivaldi's Gloria).

Can I join in with my instrument? Instrumentalists from our ranks accompany the Choir on an occasional basis.

Anything else? We are affiliated to RSCM America (www.rscmamerica.org). RSCM helps with training and runs Summer Camps. Two of our choristers recently attended a week-long RSCM course singing in Denver Cathedral.
