Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, has become the traditional day for the consumption of fats, eggs and meat, all in anticipation of the 40 days of Lent, a time of self-discipline and self-denial.

The word “shrive” is derived from shriving, a team that means confessing. A person who is shriven is forgiven of his sins. Shrove Tuesday also is referred to as Carnival, which means the removal of meat.
